Background of the Study

The National Mental Health Act, signed into law in 2023, aims to reform mental healthcare in Nigeria by improving access to psychiatric services, reducing stigma, and integrating mental health into primary healthcare. This Act replaces outdated policies and aligns Nigeria’s mental health system with international best practices.

Nasarawa State, like many other states in Nigeria, faces critical mental health challenges, including inadequate psychiatric facilities, a shortage of mental health professionals, and widespread stigma. The implementation of the National Mental Health Act in Nasarawa State is expected to improve mental health service delivery, but its effectiveness has yet to be fully assessed.

This study examines the impact of the National Mental Health Act on mental health care in Nasarawa State, evaluating its implementation and outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Mental healthcare in Nasarawa State has historically been underfunded and underdeveloped. With the enactment of the National Mental Health Act, there is an opportunity to transform psychiatric care and integrate it into the general healthcare system. However, the extent to which this policy has been implemented and its actual impact on service delivery remain uncertain.

This study aims to evaluate the impact of the National Mental Health Act on mental health care in Nasarawa State, identifying successes and challenges.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the implementation of the National Mental Health Act in Nasarawa State.

  2. To evaluate the impact of the Act on mental health service accessibility and quality.

  3. To identify challenges in implementing the Act and propose solutions.

Research Questions

  1. How effectively has the National Mental Health Act been implemented in Nasarawa State?

  2. What impact has the Act had on mental health service accessibility and quality?

  3. What challenges hinder the full implementation of the Act?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The National Mental Health Act has improved mental health service accessibility in Nasarawa State.

  2. Implementation challenges have limited the effectiveness of the Act.

  3. Strengthening policy enforcement will enhance mental healthcare delivery.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the implementation and impact of the National Mental Health Act in Nasarawa State. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining policy implementation data and reluctance from officials to discuss challenges.
